It’s almost July, and in Reno, that means Artown! Artists from around the world make their way to the biggest little city for this annual and beloved month-long art festival. If you’re new to town, here’s what to know about this city-wide event.
Celebrated for Decades
Artown is celebrating its 27th year, and my, how it’s grown. The 2022 festival will feature over 600 art events, classes, concerts, tours, lectures, workshops, exhibits, openings, burlesque dances, portrait tutorials, circus performances, and a can’t-be-missed chalk art festival. The event begins July 1, with multiple events planned daily through the end of the month.
The event schedule is filled to the brim, with hands-on activities for kids and adults. Many of the planned events and activities are entirely free, while others have a fee to cover supplies.
A few standout events:
- Northern Nevada String Serenade: Peace Like a River – this afternoon concert at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral on July 2 is free and will include portions of Brandenburg Concerto No. 2, Fantasia on a Theme, Eleanor Rigby, and Hey Jude.
- Motown in Midtown – This family-friendly event is like a mini festival itself, with vendors, a raffle prize, music, and more. Head over to the South Virginia Plaza on Thursday, July 7, from 4 to 9 pm.
- Free Level 1 Salsa – No partner or experience required! Come learn some Latin moves July 11, 18, and 25.
This year, Artown is featuring artists from Australia, Israel, Japan, Colombia, Mexico, Hawaii, and Canada. And while the pandemic threw a wrench into things for a while there, the festival is returning to its usual venues, like Wingfield and Bartley Ranch.
The beauty of Artown is in its diversity – the festival features music, dance, cultural themes, theater, history, visual arts, kid-oriented events, and so much more. There really is something for everyone, so make a point of checking the event schedule – something is bound to catch your eye.
